Trinbago Knight Riders, once placed fifth in the points table, are the new table toppers in the 2021 edition of the CPL. The Kieron Pollard-led unit, on Thursday, beat the Barbados Royals by six wickets at the Warner Park. For the Royals, they need a miracle to qualify for the top four.

TKR rise after blazing start from Mayers

After being put in to bat first, the Royals got off to a flier courtesy of Kyle Mayers’ 12-ball 24. But once Khary Pierre got rid of him in the third over, the Royals’ innings fell apart. Johnson Charles, Raymon Reifer, Azam Khan got into double figures, but they couldn’t convert.

Joshua Bishop’s unbeaten 19-ball 17 in the death overs helped the Royals post 93 in 20 overs. For the Knights, Pierre was the most successful as he picked up three wickets. Sunil Narine, Jayden Seales and Akeal Hosein accounted for two important scalps each.

Munro holds his nerve

In TKR’s run-chase, former Pakistan left-armer Mohammad Amir removed both openers- Lendl Simmons and Tion Webster- cheaply inside the first three overs. However, a 39-run partnership between Colin Munro and Darren Bravo steadied the ship for the Knights.

Munro went on stay unbeaten on 41 off 47 with four fours and one six. Bishop got two late wickets, but his efforts went in vain. Akeal Hosein smashed to seal the fate of the game. Bravo and Tim Seifert also chipped in with short, yet useful cameos for their team.

Well done to the boys: Kieron Pollard

After TKR’s win, Kieron Pollard, their skipper, was over the moon and talked about his team’s rise to the top. Jason Holder, the Royals’ skipper, on the other hand, was a tad dejected, but said that his team is in high spirits.

“I think the toss was very crucial. There was a lot of moisture. It still played difficult as the Knight Riders also took 17 overs to chase down the total. It has been a tough campaign so far but the boys are still in good spirits. They had two very good left arm spinners and the conditions supported them,” Holder was quoted as saying.

“Well done to the boys. We were struggling at the halfway stage of the tournament but we knew where we had to improve. This is the business end of the tournament and we have to nail down all the areas. They (SNP) are a good team with world class players, but it is about focusing on what we need to do and once we do that, we will give ourselves a good chance,” Pollard said
