Eight years after playing his final Test match for India, Parthiv Patel will finally realise his dream of making a comeback into the Test team. The opportunity arose after regular wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha was advised to take rest due to a thigh strain. The Gujarat Ranji players’ last Test was against Sri Lanka in 2008 and his last international contest was an ODI also against Sri Lanka in 2012 in Australia.

This opportunity provides him with a slight chance of reviving his international career. Since making his Test debut as a 17-year-old at Nottingham in 2002, Patel has managed to play in only 20 Tests with 683 runs to his name at an average of 29.69. Inconsistency, inexperience and stiff competition for the wicket keeper’s slot saw him losing the race to becoming the first choice cricketer of the team.

And, before he could prove his capability again, the phenomena called entered the cricketing scene and owned the position for nearly a decade with extraordinary success. Luck never went Patel’s way as far as his international career was concerned. But, the pocket-sized dynamo wasn’t incompetent and is now a domestic giant leading Gujarat with good success. Most recently, Parthiv Patel has been amongst the runs for Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy scoring 61, 53, 60, 21, 49 and 139* in the last six innings.

Away from the domestic scene, Parthiv plays for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Given Saha’s form, it looks unlikely that it would open doors for Parthiv in the return to the national team on a full-time basis.

Twitter, as anticipated came alive, and cricket fans welcomed the decision, stating that Gujarat’s leading man deserved this call after all hard work. A few also pointed out some amusing facts. Parthiv is already into his 14th year as a professional cricketer and played under various skippers; one of them was Anil Kumble who is currently the Head coach of the team in which he will be playing. There were many such other tweets. Have a look at all of them below.
