It was an inconsequential match but whenever MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings is in action, the world is watching. Though they’ve already secured qualification points a win here would’ve sealed them a top 2 finish. Dhoni won the toss and elected to chase, the fact that his bowlers haven’t quite enforced the plans and the strength in their batting prompted him to make the decision. However, Shreyas Iyer’s Daredevils managed to post a score that was well beyond the Super Kings’ reach.

Deepak Chahar got rid of Prithvi Shaw for 17 runs and Lungi Ngidi making a comeback from injury was too good for Iyer as his off-stump went for a walk in the park. Their most consistent and dangerous scorer Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 38, Glenn Maxwell on being brought back into the team returned with 5 runs but if you thought the innings was over well it wasn’t.

Vijay Shankar who has discovered his hitting prowess this IPL season along with an unlikely striker in Harshal Patel scored 36 each to take their team to 162/5 in 20 overs. Patel made the best of Dwayne Bravo’s last over punishing CSK’s death bowler and added 26 runs to their total. At the halfway stage though the score was still under the average total at the venue one got a feeling that Chennai allowed DD to post 30-40 runs too many.

Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu started off in their regular style striking the ball sweet but Watson wasn’t quite home today and struggled to time the ball. His misery was ended by Amit Mishra who set him on his way back for 14 off 23. Rayudu ensured CSK still had the edge playing the big shots at will. He scored yet another half century but his dominance ended exactly on 50 as Maxwell held on to a skier in the deep.

Thereafter Suresh Raina, as well as Dhoni, couldn’t get their timing right and the slowness of the surface along with the piling required rate didn’t allow them to play their natural game. In the end, they fell 34 runs short of the target and gave Delhi a consolation win.
