The Indian team have struggled to get a consistent opening pair after Sehwag-Gambhir. The struggle finally seemed to be concluded, when the selectors found the 24-year-old Karnataka batsman Lokesh Rahul.
Rahul, since then has taken the world aback with consistent performances through his vigour and confidence. There have been praises from all ends since his exceptional display against the visiting English side.
His highest score of 199 came against the same opposition in a match-defining innings at Chennai, where India came victorious to complete the series win.
Since the series against England, the opening batsman has failed to convert his starts into a match-defining innings in the one-off Test against Asian neighbours Bangladesh. Although the opener has been consistent and determined to get the cat off the bag, he has failed on several occasions.
The stage seemed to bet set for the 24-year-old to get a match-saving century against the likes of the Australian bowlers, which include Mitchell Starc and consistent Josh Hazlewood.
The right-handed opening batsman began the tour on a positive note with a promising 64 runs in the Pune Test where the other Indian batsmen struggled to find form. The opener, however, could not display his first innings form in the second innings at Pune with only ten runs.
The second Test was at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, a well-known territory for KL Rahul. It is the same ground where the 24-year-old has impressed the selectors with an array of innings. The opener got off to a blistering start to reach a score of 90 runs with each and every passing wicket on the other end.
Nathan Lyon dismissed the opener, thanks to a tame and tired shot played by the batsman. Since then, the opener has scored another 50 runs in the third Test, only to get dismissed at 51. The series decider saw the 24-year-old get off to another good start only for him to throw his wicket away off the bowling of Pat Cummins.
Since the beginning of the Australian series, the 24-year-old has made five fifty’s in the span of six innings, unable to convert the 50s into a well-deserved century.
Here are some of the Twitterati reactions following his fifth fifty:

The fact that KL Rahul is not converting 50s to bigger scores is going to start bothering him soon, if it hasn't already. #IndvAus
