The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence on September 19 this year in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The prevailing situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in India has forced the BCCI to shift the tournament out of the country. But that is not the only hurdle they are handling as Vivo pulled out of the sponsorship deal for this year owing to the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops.

The public outrage against Chinese companies has been immense on social media since then. BCCI was also under the scanner after the board decided to retain Vivo as IPL’s sponsor. However, after the mobile manufacturing company pulled out, the BCCI is trying to find a sponsor for this season. Reports are coming in now that even Yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved has also joined in the race to sponsor the T20 extravaganza.

Byju’s, Coca Cola and Amazon are three other major companies in fray for the sponsorship deal. Patanjali’s spokesperson SK Tijarawala confirmed to Economic Times that they will be bidding for IPL sponsorship as they are aiming to enter global market.

“We are considering the IPL title sponsorship for this year, since we want to give the Patanjali brand a global marketing platform,” he said.

Memes and jokes on Patanjali IPL

Meanwhile, the fans are in splits after knowing about Patanjali bidding for IPL sponsorship and they have also started imagining things. Memes and jokes are flooded on social media with some taking a hilarious dig at the company’s various products. IPL, over the years, have had different sponsors for Man of the Match and other awards and the Twitterati has hilarious matched it with Patanjali products.

The IPL 2020 will go until November 10 this year with the BCCI looking to utilise Diwali week as well. The final will be played on a weekday for the first time this season. The board has also released the SOPs for the franchises to follow with all the teams expected to leave by August 20. It also remains to be seen if Patanjali manages to grab the IPL sponsorship.
