Twitter set to launch India-only 'Cricket Tab' for Android users

Micro-blogging site Twitter on March 29 (Tuesday) announced that it is testing and will soon roll out a ‘Cricket’ tab. The officials from Twitter have stated that the tab will serve as a channel of discovery for what’s happening in cricket along with access to exclusive video content, real-time match updates through a Scorecard and several other widgets.

The micro-blogging site will be partnering with several broadcasters and creators to provide users with video contents which will include in-match moments as well. Twitter users will also be able access custom cricket team emojis which will be available in eight languages including English, Hindi and Tamil as well.

According to the Twitter officials, about 75 % of Indians on the micro-blogging site are identified as cricket fans and 58% play the sport. Similarly, more than 4.4 million of Indian users have shared 96.2 millions tweets about cricket in the past one year (January 2021-2022).

Director of Product for Twitter India, Shirish Andhare in a statement said as quoted by News18, “Twitter is a megaphone for millions of people in the country who are already ‘Making India Happen’ on Twitter. We learn from the conversations constantly unfolding on the service and they motivate us to build more for our audiences here.”

“Through our new Cricket experiment offering an immersive experience], we want to make it easier for India’s cricket fans to find relevant and engaging content as well as encourage conversations and find latest updates including the score all in one place,” he added.

In the beginning, the cricket fans will also have a variety of tabs to access and view content in various formats. The tab will also have an ‘Events’ page where the cricketing lovers will be able to follow the most recent tweets and updates from the cricket field. Content widgets like top players, team rankings and scorecards can also be accessed through this upcoming initiative by Twitter.
