Every time the Indian selectors have met in the last few months, one name that has constantly been in focus for most others outside that room is Mayank Agarwal. The right-hander who bats at the top of the order has been consistently scoring runs in List A as well as first-class cricket. Very recently he was a part of the victorious India B team in the Quadrangular series and scored a lot of runs. But he was once again ignored when India squad for the Asia Cup 2018 was announced.

Mayank was the highest run-scorer in the previous season of the Ranji Trophy as he piled on 1160 runs, which was in sight of VVS Laxman’s all-time record of 1415 runs in a season. He carried on his form in List A cricket as well. On the back of his flourish, the Karnataka lad was picked in the India A squad and has delivered at that level as well. Agarwal has played 6 matches and contributed 442 runs to the team with three hundreds at a superlative average of 88.40.

In the most recent Quadrangular series, he scored a hundred against India A in the in the second game and another half century in the final to set the platform for India B’s win. Overall in his 50-overs career, Agarwal has 3360 runs to his name in 67 matches at an average of 50.90 with 12 hundreds and 13 fifties.

Thus a lot of fans expected his name to feature on the squad list for the Asia Cup. However, the selectors still seem to feel that he hasn’t done enough to secure a berth in the national team. On the other hand, his state-mate Manish Pandey who was dropped from the ODI team for the tour of England was picked for the tournament.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to the selection decision:
