Rishabh Pant has been under the cosh of late. The southpaw has been deemed as MS Dhoni’s replacement going into the future, but he is yet to find his feet. The left-hander has slumped to a number of failures owing to which his place in the Indian team has come under the scanner. Pant also flattered to deceive in the T20Is against the West Indies, scoring only 51 runs.

In the Mumbai T20I, Pant scored a duck and the netizens reckoned that Sanju Samson should’ve gotten an opportunity. Coming into the ODIs, Pant was under severe pressure, though he had support of the team management, including skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri. However, he scored a 69-ball 71 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Rishabh Pant shines in Chennai

He came to bat after India lost the crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Kohli inside the first 20 overs. There was ample time for Pant to get his eye in and get a substantial score under his belt. He started cautiously and gave support to Shreyas Iyer, who has been in good form ever since he returned to the national setup. The duo injected momentum back into the innings.

After getting his eye in, Pant scored his maiden ODI half-century off 49 balls. He put on 114 for the fourth wicket along with Iyer. His knock was laced with five fours and a colossal hit into the stands off the wily Roston Chase. In the 37th over, Pant lost Iyer to Alzarri Joseph, who picked up his second wicket. Three overs later, Pant also got out to opposition skipper Kieron Pollard.

Pollard churned out a slower delivery and Pant went for the pick-up shot. The batsman lost his balance and hit the leather straight down the throat of Shimron Hetmyer. There was a chance for Pant to score a ton and he would be disappointed for not being able to accomplish the milestone.

Pollard was absolutely pumped after getting the wicket. It was also his third white-ball fifty versus the Caribbean team after the couple of fifties in T20Is. In the meantime, Twitterati is a tad relieved after Pant found some rhythm with the bat in hand after a string of failures.
