Prior to the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales, a number of experts and pundits reckoned that India could go on and become the champions. Living up to the expectations, Virat Kohli & Co. finished on top of the table with 15 points from nine matches. Barring their 31-run defeat at the hands of England, and a bit of a stutter versus Afghanistan, the Men in Blue had turned out to be a brute force.

However, fate had something cruel in the store for Team India in their semi-final match against New Zealand at the Old Trafford in Manchester. Kohli’s men lost the match by 18 runs and bowed out of the championship. After India lost the toss, the Indian bowlers did a great job, restricting the Black Caps to 239 in 50 overs after the encounter went into the reserve day due to a persistent downpour.

MS Dhoni couldn’t save India from a defeat

The run-chase wasn’t expected to be a tough one for the in-form Indian batting line-up. However, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and captain Kohli perished at the team score of five in the fourth over. Dinesh Karthik also returned back cheaply following which Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya had a partnership and scored in the 30s.

MS Dhoni (50) and Ravindra Jadeja (77) didn’t throw in the towel and tried their hearts out. However, after both perished, India went down the barrel. A direct throw Martin Guptill ran Dhoni out in the penultimate over and it dashed India’s World Cup hopes.

Meanwhile, Vivek Oberoi, the popular Indian actor, posted a GIF on social media surrounding the defeat. In the clip, an individual is walking down the street, thinking that a lady walking towards him wants to hug him. Much to his disappointment, she goes past him and hugs another man who walking behind the first guy.

The 42-year-old actor captioned the GIF and wrote, “This is what happened to Indian fans in the World Cup semi finals! World Cup semi final,”

It didn’t go down well with the netizens by any stretch of the imaginations. Subsequently, people trolled him for making fun of the Indian team and came down hard at the actor.
