He has already made it in the squad in place of the out-of-form Murali Vijay. And now, the Twitterati wants teenage sensation, Prithvi Shaw, to replace opener KL Rahul in the fourth Test against England scheduled to begin at Rose Bowl on August 30. It would be a dream coming true for the 18-year-old if he goes on to make his Test debut in a year which is proving to be a great one in his career.

India tried all three openers they brought to the series and already, enough of a musical chair has already been played with them. In the first Test at Edgbaston, the visitors played all the three openers – Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and Rahul with the third coming in place of Cheteshwar Pujara at No.3. After all of them failed, they axed Dhawan and sent Vijay and Rahul to open in the second Test at Lord’s.

Vijay returned with a pair on that occasion and the third Test at Trent Bridge saw the combination of Dhawan and Vijay taking guard as openers. It was a comparatively better show by the Indian openers at Trent Bridge and they won the match but the openers are yet to score a fifty in the series.

Call for Prithvi to replace out-of-form Rahul

The clamour has now grown for sending Shaw to open the innings in place of Rahul. The Karnataka batsman played in the T20I series and also scored an unbeaten fifty in the side game against Essex but in the three Tests that followed, he could muster only 94 runs at a poor average of 15.66.

India went for 20-year-old Rishabh Pant as their wicketkeeper at Trent Bridge, making his debut in Tests in place of an out-of-form Dinesh Karthik. Shaw has already made some runs in England in the opening position for India ‘A’ – including a number of hundreds – and the Twitterati feels that like Pant, this young cricketer, too, has a big heart to make the most of his Test debut in a series which is at a crucial stage at the moment.
