When Umar Akmal forayed into international cricket, he was regarded as one of most sparkling talents Pakistan has ever produced. Subsequently, played some scintillating knocks which made the headlines. However, inconsistency marred his career and he gradually went out of contention for a berth in the Pakistan national team.
The Lahore-born cricketer recently played for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). During the tournament, he only managed 57 runs off five games at an abysmal average of 14 and with a strike-rate of a run-a-ball. Brendon McCullum, who was skipper of the Qalandars, came down hard on the right-handed batsman and termed him as troublesome.
The pledge of Umar Akmal
The 2018 Pakistan Cup will commence from April 25 with the opening game to be played between Baluchistan and Punjab (Pakistan) in Faisalabad. Umar Akmal will represent the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the tournament. The swashbuckling cricketer recently spoke to the media and talked about claiming his stake back in the team on the back of some impressive performance in the series as per reports in brecorder.com.
“I will do well in Pakistan Cup and force the selectors to take me on. I don’t know why Mickey Arthur doesn’t like me but as a coach I like him. I can’t say much about [Mickey Arthur] but I am insistent on what I said before.” Akmal mentioned. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will play their opening game against the Federal Areas on April 26 at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
The cricketer also questioned his eviction from the Test squad when Waqar Younis was in charge. “If you look at my last four Test innings, I did 3x50s and did not get to bat in one inning. So at that point Waqar Younis said that he [Umar] is no longer a Test player. This you must ask them [other coaches] why I was not selected for Tests but I am not giving up hope.” he added.
