Pakistan’s horrendous tour of Australia has finally come to an end after the side suffered a 4-1 drubbing in the ODI series at the hands of the hosts. Whenever the going gets tough for a side, controversies crop up. This time it was no different as Umar Gul came out and bashed veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik for his poor performance in the recently concluded series.

“There are always high expectations from seniors when they are present in the team and they should perform as well based upon their experience,” stated Gul in an interview to Pak Passsion.Net. “If you look at how well Shoaib Malik was placed for a big innings in the fourth ODI, it was expected that he should have converted that to a big hundred and taken Pakistan to victory but that did not happen which is not only a disappointment but also very troubling,” he added.

32-year old Gul was recalled into the national side after being out from the 50-over competition for more than two years. The fast bowler backed the under-fire captain Azhar Ali. “Azhar’s own performance is suffering but more importantly, he is not able to deliver as a captain,” said Gul  “However, he is still young and learning, which is why I am a firm believer that instead of replacing Azhar, we should let him establish himself as a captain.”

The pacer also discussed the team’s dismal show in the five-match series. “From what I can see, apart from the obvious fielding lapses at crucial stages, there was an element of fatigue which caused our players to not perform at their best,” he said. “Not only that, but our bowlers only performed well in patches and did not deliver in the death overs  as well.”
