Uttarakhand will finally feature in the Ranji Trophy in the upcoming season as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to form a nine-member committee to oversee the proceedings. The consensus committee comprises of six members from different cricket associations, one Uttarakhand Government nominee and a couple BCCI nominees including the retired official Professor Ratnakar Shetty. However, the decision was taken in the recent meeting which was attended by Diana Edulji, Rahul Johri and Vinod Rai.

The previous season of Ranji Trophy saw 28 teams contesting for the ultimate glory with seven sides divided into four groups. Along with Uttarakhand, the five northeastern states Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya will also field separate teams as they have conveyed the same to the Supreme Court. With the number of teams set to increase substantially this year, the BCCI might create the second division in order to accommodate the newcomers.

With the BCCI technical committee also recommending the inclusion of Bihar, 36 teams are likely to compete in the Ranji trophy this time around. The consensus committee for Uttarakhand is expected to be around for 1 year before a BCCI recognised body is formed.

Vinod Rai confirms the news

The chairman of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) Vinod Rai confirmed the news according to the Indian Express. He cleared that Uttarakhand will take part in the other BCCI tournaments as well apart from the Ranji Trophy.

“They (all rival associations in Uttarakhand) have swept aside their differences to ensure that a team from Uttarakhand plays Ranji Trophy and other BCCI tournaments from the upcoming season. So, by consensus, a committee has been formed with BCCI nominees in it. It will start working from next week onwards,” Rai said.
