The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) has recently announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting September 19. Last year around, the won five out of their six encounters in Group A and qualified for the quarterfinal. Unfortunately, they slumped to a three-wicket defeat against Maharashtra at Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi to bow out of the tournament.

In this edition of the tournament, they are placed in Elite Group A along with Goa, Railways, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Mumbai, and Vidarbha. Their first match is against Mumbai at Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium (KSCA) in Alur. They are scheduled to play all their group matches in Bangalore itself.

An experienced squad in place

Just Cricket Academy Ground and M Chinnaswamy Stadium are the other venues where Baroda will play. The squad will be captained by Deepak Hooda, who has successfully plied his trade in India’s domestic cricket ever since November 2014. The Rohtak-born cricketer has also played quite a few matches in the prestigious cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL).

Experienced campaigner and power-hitter Yusuf Pathan remains to be the fulcrum of the side. Krunal Pandya, who recently found a place in the Indian T20 squad after his sterling performances for Mumbai Indians (MI), also was selected. Moreover, the experience of Pinal Shah and Bhargav Bhatt need to come to the fore for Baroda in the 50-overs tournament.

After failing to advance beyond the quarterfinals, Hooda and Co will be keen to go one step ahead and win the championship. Moreover, with the World Cup in England and Wales to be played next year, a number of their players will want to come up with impressive performances and make a case for themselves to enter the national squad.

Here is the squad

Deepak Hooda (C), Atit Sheth, Kedar Devdhar, Aditya Waghmore, Vishnu Solanki, Yusuf Pathan, Swapnil Singh, Krunal Pandya, Pinal Shah (wk), Mitesh Patel (wk), Bhargav Bhatt, Rishi Arothe, Lukman Meriwala, Baba Safi Khan Pathan, Ninad Rathva
