Virat Kohli among the most searched names in India in 2016

Indian cricket team skipper across all formats Virat Kohli has been named one of the hottest search keywords of the year 2016 for both Hindi and English searches. Popular cellular network Reliance Jio owned by Mukesh Ambani that revolutionised the Indian industry was also among the most searched keywords by internet users in the country in the year gone by a report by Business Standards suggested.

“Reliance Jio is the ‘Hottest Keyword’ of 2016, with 116 million page views in both Hindi and English content, owing to the group’s launch of multiple free calls and data services in a scenario where telecom companies are struggling to provide faster and deeper connectivity,” said the report released by UC News.

The objective of the report was to analyse the preferences of Indian audiences as far as web content is concerned. In the sports category, Kohli and former Indian skipper MS Dhoni were at the top. In terms of numbers – 108 million page views were dedicated to the new Indian captain combined in both English and Hindi content.

“There is huge potential for user-generated content in India. The self-publishing and online content creating industry is set for a major leap, emulating growth in the China market,” said Jack Huang, President, Overseas Business, Alibaba Mobile Business Group, in a statement.

The report also revealed top names from other facets Bollywood Super Star Salman Khan retained his title of ‘Most Viewed Bollywood Actor’ while Priyanka Chopra the Bollywood turned Hollywood star was the most searched female actor for the English reading audience.

“Priyanka Chopra is the most popular female actor among English readers whereas Kareena Kapoor Khan scores with the Hindi-reading audiences,” the report noted.

Earlier Virat had also taken the highest spot in the Forbes list of the richest Indian sportspersons leading Dhoni in that list as well. While the Delhi lad earned 134.44 crore in the year whereas Dhoni was behind him at 122 crores.
