The Test series between India and Sri Lanka got underway in Kolkata at Eden Gardens on Thursday amidst the rain around. Only 11.5 overs were bowled on the first day which saw persistent drizzle and bad light interrupting the play frequently. But the visitors made full use of the conditions and reduced India to 17/3 under overcast conditions. However, the dismissal of Kohli left everyone stunned as he bagged a rare duck in the longest format of the game.

Virat Kohli came out to bat with the team in trouble at 8/2 in the seventh over and needed to play a patient game. The ball was doing all the tricks thanks to the conditions which spiced up the pitch which already had a fair amount of grass on it. Suranga Lakmal was bowling a dream spell and Kohli played and missed his very first delivery. The bowlers kept bowling at the outswingers to him and suddenly Lakmal surprised him with an incoming delivery which jagged back from the full length.

The skipper missed the line and was rapped on the pads only to be given out by the umpire Nigel Llong. He reviewed the decision after consulting with his partner Cheteshwar Pujara but the ball was clipping the leg-stump and the on-field umpire’s call stayed. Thankfully for the team, the review was retained courtesy the new rule. Kohli failed to score a run off 11 balls in the middle and returned to the pavilion.

Soon after the dismissal of the skipper, the play was stopped due to bad light but not before Pujara almost lost his wicket to another peach of a delivery, this time from Lahiru Gamage. The overcast conditions didn’t help India’s cause as the light kept fading right through the day. Rain gods are most likely to have their say in this Test match and light will also play its part as the winter season has started in India. It becomes pitch dark very soon in the western part of India. Though the play will start early now in the coming days, the fading light might not allow the teams to bowl the full quota of overs.
