Melbourne-born Jones commentated in a plethora of leagues across the world and was also signed up to do off-tube commentary for this year's IPL.

Former Australia cricketer, coach and commentator Dean Jones has passed away at the age of 59 in Mumbai. Jones, who represented Australia in Tests as well as ODIs, was also part of the commentary panel of the on-going IPL 2020. He was even spotted commentating in last night’s game between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Jones reportedly died of a heart attack in Mumbai, where he was present to fulfil his commentary duties for the IPL 2020. In a playing career spanning between 1984 and 1992, Jones donned the Australia jersey in 52 Tests and 164 ODIs.

While he scored 3631 runs including 11 tons in the traditional format, Jones gathered 6068 runs in ODIs at an impressive average of 44.61. Jones, a popular figure on the internet due to his comments and analysis, was in a bio-secure bubble in Mumbai and was associated with Star Sports’ commentary panel.

Dean Jones suffered cardiac arrest in his hotel in Mumbai

As per reports, Jones suffered a cardiac arrest after attending briefing session for today’s IPL broadcast featuring Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab. While chatting with his colleagues in the hotel corridor, Jones suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the authorities. Jones’ family in Australia has also been informed about the tragic news.

Jones’ best knock came in 1986 when he smashed a double ton against India at Chepauk in the unforgiving heat. On a hot and humid day, Jones etched one of the best innings in Test cricket, amassing an epic 210 in gruelling conditions. He felt dizzy and even vomited during his fighting knock. He, however, refused to give up as he played a crucial role in the Test resulting in a tie.

Jones’ sudden demise, especially when he was actively involved in the commentary team of IPL 2020, came in as a huge shock for everyone. Twitter was flooded with messages for Jones as several names of the cricket fraternity mourned his demise and offered condolences.

Prominent names like Virat Kohli, Michael Clarke, Ramiz Raja, Shikhar Dhawan, Wahab Riaz and David Warner mourned the demise of ‘Prof Deano’. Due to his cricketing knowledge, personality, insights and analysis, Jones will be remembered by generations to come.
