He’s done it all, he’s scored substantially in most continents, piled on big Test knocks, converted hundred into big daddy double tons has over 5500 runs at an average of 53 but Virat Kohli is yet to make a mark in England. The only thing that prevents someone from referring to Kohli as probably the greatest batsman of this generation is his record in England. Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri thinks this time Kohli will prove why he is the best player.

On the last tour, when Kohli was 25 and carried more flaws in his game, he was still a highly rated batsman. But a lot of perceptions changed after the tour of England as he scored 134 runs in a five-match Test series which counts up to an average of 13.5. The score sheet Test after Test just didn’t improve – 1, 8, 25, 0, 39, 28, 0,7, 6 and 20 is all he managed then. It was James Anderson who just got the better of him each time and in a similar manner.

Look at his record

However, in the last four years, he has worked on his technique and especially that against the moving ball and not just Kohli but Shastri is also confident as well that the skipper will score big this time around.

“Look at his (Kohli’s) record. I don’t have to spell out what he has done in the last four years. When you perform in that fashion, you are mentally at a different level as well. You are waiting for whatever test comes your way,” Shastri told Espncricinfo.

In the only practice game the team played before the Test series, the right-hander scored a half century but was out fishing outside the off-stump. As per experts, he likes to drive the ball as a part of his natural game which makes his susceptible to edging the ball. England know this and will want to exploit his weakness once again and rub onto it which will give them an opening into the series.

There is no denying the fact that Kohli is the best batsman in the Indian team and what he scores will determine a lot of things for his team. Shastri in his place has seen the ward do wonders in the last four years and thinks it is on this tour that the 29-year-old will show the British people what makes him the best batsman in the world.

“Yes, he might have had an ordinary series when he came here four years ago. But four years down the line he is the best player in the world. And he would like to get out there and show the British public why he is the best player in the world,” he said.
