Back in India’s 2014 tour of England, Virat Kohli had an abysmal series with the willow, but the issue has been resolved for the fact that in the recently concluded five-match Test series, he emerged as the leading run scorer with 593 runs from five matches at an average of 59.30. Nevertheless, he was found wanting at times while captaining the national team.

On a number of instances, India had their opponents by the scruff of their necks, but Joe Root and Co were let off the hook owing to which the visiting team couldn’t have the last laugh in four of the five matches. In the meantime, Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer reckons that Virat still has plenty to learn and his inexperience as a skipper was palpable on the field.

“He (Virat) still has a lot to learn. Like we saw in South Africa earlier and now in England too, there were instances when right field placements or timely bowling changes made by him could have made a big difference. That was missing again. It has just been two years (he took over four years back) since he took over as a captain so at times the lack of experience shows,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Virat’s upcoming Test assignments

However, Gavaskar backed the Delhi-born cricketer after he lashed out at a journalist in a post-match press conference of the fifth and final Test at Kennington Oval in London, which India lost by 118 runs. After an abysmal campaign on English soil, Virat’s next assignment will be the home Test series against the Windies in October.

Thereafter in December, Kohli and Co are scheduled to play Australia in a four-match Test series. Back in their tour of Australia in 2011 and 2014 respectively, India couldn’t manage a single win and the Indian captain would be hoping to turn his team’s fortunes.
