Virat Kohli is the fittest Indian cricketer; fact. Does he train for the longest duration? Not so much. He trains with the highest intensity; fact. Every Indian cricketer in the current scene takes inspiration from Kohli to get their fitness on track and make it a priority. He spends quality time in the gym, lifts heavy loads, does compound workouts and high-intensity cardio training.

Before Kohli made fitness cool only a few cricketers in the team had that ‘fit’ tag. You could count the good fielders – those who get off the block swiftly are agile on the field and athletic. It is the other way round now only one or two players (including the bowlers) are tagged ‘slow or average fielders’ in the Indian team. Along with training Kohli also takes extreme care of his diet and that is rubbing off on his teammates a well.

In a recent interview with ET NOW, the Indian skipper answered rapid-fire questions about his current level of fitness, his fitness idol, the longest he’s ever run in life, the heaviest he’s lifted and what he likes to munch on (there’s a brand plugin there).

Here’s how the rapid-fire Q&A panned out:

Q: Are you the fittest you have ever been in your life?

Virat: At this moment… yeah.

Q: Who did you look up to for fitness?

Virat: For fitness, no one actually. I have just understood this all by myself, I didn’t look upto anyone.

Q: What is the longest you have ever run in your life?

Virat: 20 minutes at the speed of 14 kilometres an hour.

Q: What is the heaviest you have lifted in weights?

Virat: Deadlift of 145 kg

Q: If you ever feel like munching what will you have?

Virat: ‘Too yum!’ multigrain chips. (Names the brand he endorses and laughs. He’s a brand manager’s dream!)

Kohli is currently in rehabilitation trying to get fit and recover from the neck injury he sustained during an Indian Premier League (IPL) league match. The injury has ruled him out of the county matches he was supposed to play for Surrey this season ahead of the England tour.
