Anil Kumble joined the elite list that had only one other player achieve the top most feat in Test cricket. When Kumble scalped all 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan at the Feroze Shah Kotla in Delhi back in 1999, he became only the second bowler to scalp all 10 wickets in an innings. He joined the elite list that had English pacer Jim Laker. No other bowler has achieved the feat since then. While the moment remains to be a piece of history, very few know that Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis actually had plans to play the spoilsport.

Apparently, Waqar Younis was planning to get run out so that Kumble could be denied the 10-wicket haul. Kumble had already snatched 9 wickets and was looking set for a 10th when Waqar Younis came in to bat. He joined Wasim Akram at the crease. Waqar then walked up to Akram and asked him whether either of them should get run out in order to play the spoilsport for the leggie.

In a conversation with DNA, Wasim Akram confirmed the same as he quoted, “Kumble had got nine wickets and me and Waqar were batting in the crease. Waqar came to me and said ‘how about getting run out?’ so that Kumble does not get his 10th wicket.”

To this, a firm Wasim Akram replied that if Kumble is destined to get his 10th, he will get it anyway. However, he will try not to throw it away. But, it was Akram who eventually fell to the spin of Kumble.

“I said ‘you can’t deny him the feat if he is destined for it. But I can assure you that I am not going to give my wicket to Kumble. But subsequently, it was me who gifted my wicket to Kumble,” added Wasim Akram.

Recently, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag reminded the fans of the very same incident. He posted this story on Twitter and wrote a caption that read, “Kismat ke aage ,all saazish fail. Well done Wasim bhai. What a day it was at the Kotla by Anil bhai.”
