Washington Sundar, the latest cricketer to receive his maiden ODI call-up, feels that he is ready to make his debut at the highest level. The youngster was included in the squad at the last minute when Kedar Jadhav was injured and ruled out of the three-match series. Sundar is already the part of the T20I squad which will follow after the conclusion of the ongoing ODI series. However, it remains to be seen if he will be handed a debut in any of the three games.

Sundar has been in the radar of the selectors for a long time now and was about to be picked for the series against New Zealand. But the 18-year-old failed to clear the yo-yo fitness test which has been the benchmark nowadays to make it to the national side. Though he cleared it this time around and has been straight away rewarded for his consistent performances at the domestic level. Sundar had a decent IPL season earlier this year and he backed it up with a brilliant Ranji season as well.

You have to be prepared always

Washington Sundar was preparing himself at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for the upcoming T20I series. Though he felt that a cricketer should be ready whenever the opportunity is presented. “An ODI call-up at this stage of my career feels great and it’s an amazing moment for me. As a professional cricketer, you need to be always prepared for whatever opportunity which you get. I have been gearing up for the T20 series at the NCA. I need to tune myself on the mental front slightly from T20s to 50-overs cricket. And I’m ready for the challenge,” he told Times of India during an interview.

Washington left for Dharamsala late on Saturday night and joined the Indian team early in the morning. He is not the part of the first ODI however and will have to wait for his chance to make his debut in the 50-overs format. India is currently defending the low total of 112 as they were bowled out under 40 overs after being inserted to bat first by Sri Lanka.
