In his prime, Wasim Akram was the nightmare for every batter, no matter how great he was. However, there were some batters who were courageous enough to give the former Pakistani speedster a tough time. When Wasim was asked to name the batter who wouldn’t surrender in front of his killer swing and pace, he named Sunil Gavaskar quite unequivocally.

Not only did he admit that getting Gavaskar’s wicket meant unbridled joy for him, he also termed the legendary Indian batter as one of the greatest openers. But all said and done, he still feels Sachin Tendulkar is the best cricketer to have ever graced the game.

Prized wicket

As per reports in Gulf News India, the man from Lahore was present at the Sharjah Book Fair, where he revealed “I have bowled at many a great batsmen but my prize wicket will remain as that of Sunil Gavaskar, one of the greatest openers. If anyone is keen to learn proper batting technique, then one should watch Gavaskar who batted without helmet and was always right on top.”

Speaking of Tendulkar, the owner of 502 ODI wickets said, “He is a great guy, a true master of the game. No controversy despite a long career. It has only been cricket for him on and off the field. The best cricketer the world has seen.”

On being asked to comment something on the current Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, Wasim stated: “Kohli is the modern great. Thirty-two one-day hundreds, and that too most of his hundreds in second innings for a winning cause and that shows the greatness of this player.”

Why isn’t Wasim coaching Pakistan?

We have seen Akram as the bowling coach of various franchises, who take in part in various T20 leagues all over the world. However, Akram still isn’t associated with the Men in Green. On being asked about it, the man who scored 257 runs against Zimbabwe in Sheikhupura in 1996-97 said, “Pakistan is today the champion of the champions and No. 1 in T20 format so why should I be the coach? I am willing to help anyone. I have given tips to India’s Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan and as a sportsman I will help anyone whoever comes to me asking for tips. I don’t care whether he is from Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.”
