Wasim Jaffer set to play for Vidarbha from the upcoming Ranji season: Wasim Jaffer is set to end his 19 year first-class stint with Mumbai as he will be seen playing for Vidarbha from this season. Jaffer will now replace Rakesh Dhruv and join the likes of Tamil Nadu’s Subramaniam Badrinath and Karnataka’s Ganesh Satish who have moved to Vidarbha during last season.

Wasim Jaffer is currently the highest run-getter in Ranji Trophy history and he is just 241 runs short of becoming 1st player to complete 10000 runs in the tournament’s history.

Regarding the transfer, Prakash Dixit, the president of the Vidarbha Cricket Association president told to ESPNcricinfo, “Wasim will obviously bring in loads of experience and expertise. His presence will not only be handy in the batting department but also with regard to helping young batsmen from Vidarbha hone their skills and take their game to the next level.”

Jaffer will be talking about his transfer once he returns to India as he is currently part of an overseas vacation.

Vidarbha decided to leave Rakesh Dhruv for Jaffer as a domestic team can sign a maximum of just three players on its roster. Hence the left-arm spinner was left out once Jaffer agreed to come on board.

Jaffer’s decision came only after his most forgettable seasons in first-class cricket, mainly due to the injuries he suffered during Mumbai’s Ranji campaign.

However, Jaffer might not feel away from his Mumbai team mates as he will now be accompanied by Paras Mhambrey, the former Mumbai and India pacer who took over as Vidarbha coach last year. Making Mhambrey as coach turned things for Vidarbha as he managed to rope in three experienced professionals so far and Vidarbha finished third in Group B last season, qualifying for the Ranji knockouts after almost two decades.

The 37-year-old right-hand batsman has so far scored 16845 runs in the 223 first class matches he has played scoring at an average of 50.58 with help of 51 centuries out of which 35 came in the Ranji Trophy.
