Hobart Hurricanes ended Sydney Thunders’ unbeaten streak when both the teams met each other on the New Year’s day. Tait and Bailey starred in the game but, Andre Russell’s athletic effort was also a highlight of the match.
The Hurricanes, however, did not have any problems in batting first on the green wicket which had shorter boundaries (54m on the Ricky Ponting stand). The match which was being dominated by the batsmen to an extent till now suddenly witnessed a rippling effort by West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell. Russell is athletic and a great catcher and today he just provided it with another brilliant example.
It was in the 10th over of the match by Fawad Ahmed when Dan Christian, shortly after hitting a boundary in the previous over, scooped a fuller ball which came right under his bat. It connected nicely and was struck with velocity. But, the agile West Indian quickly moved to his left, and dived full length to snap up a two-handed catch.
The ball was wide and little away from his reach but that was just not the excuse for Russell to let the ball fly past him. The on-field umpire just waited for the confirmation from the third umpire before giving it out to make sure the catch was clean and the ball did not touch the turf after Russell touched down.
Apart from the outstanding fielding effort by Andre Russell, Fawad Ahmed also deserves credit for this textbook style dismissal where the bowler induces a batsman to drive who, in turn scoops a catch towards the fielder.
