MS Dhoni was at his best last night. First he trolled Kevin Pietersen during a microphone interview with teammate Manoj Tiwary, he followed it up by a cheeky request for DRS when umpire S Ravi overruled a leg-before shout which looked absolutely plumb.

The funny incident happened in the 15th over of the Mumbai Indians innings which was bowled by Imran Tahir. Tahir fired in a flipper which Kieron Pollard failed to read as he was stuck in the crease and was rapped of the pads. The ball took the deflection of the pad and hit the bat which confused S Ravi the umpire. Dhoni and Tahir immediately went up for a huge appeal which was subsequently turned down.

While Tahir had hands on his hips, Dhoni signaled for a DRS call. Ostensibly, DRS is not used in the Indian Premier League. Pollard was lucky to be still batting as the ball would have crashed into the centre of middle stump.

Tahir enjoyed a great debut for Rising Pune Supergiant last night returning with 3/28. Initially ignored in the IPL auctions – despite being the No. 1 bowler in ODI and T20 cricket – Tahir was given an opportunity when injuries marred the RPS camp. He took the opportunity with both hands and did a great job in picking 3 wickets off his first 11 balls in the game.

RPS won the game by 7 wickets courtesy a brilliant whirlwind 84* by the captain Steven Smith. Opener Ajinkya Rahane contributed to the win as well with an entertaining 60-run knock at the top of the order which gave RPS chase of 185 a great start.

After a disappointing season last year, RPS will be relieved to get themselves on the points table in the first game itself. They will now face Kings XI Punjab at Indore on April 8.
