Imran Tahir and Faf du Plessis were fined a portion of their respective match fees courtesy of maintaining a slow over-rate against the Australians in the fifth and final ODI of the South Africa v Australia series. However, the fine to Imran Tahir was something that caught the eye of one and all following the 36-year old’s on-field altercation with southpaw David Warner.
The incident took place towards the close of the innings when an Australian win looked rather improbable. With 12 overs to play, Tahir and Warner were involved in a heated argument with the umpires on the day having to make an intervention to separate the two players. However, the incident was not yet done and dusted.
The very next over, the final over of Tahir’s spell saw the argument go to the next level. John Hastings, the twelfth man on the day said a few words to set off the spark in Tahir. Clearly angered, Tahir was once again calmed by the umpires with Hashim Amla also intervening to calm down the irate Imran Tahir.
One of the reasons for the Australian’s anger would have perhaps been the fact that Tahir took his celebrations overboard after taking his wicket, something that most certainly not gone down too well with some of the Australia players.

South Africa eventually defended the total that was they had set for the visitors to complete the clean sweep. Faf du Plessis, who filled in for the absent AB de Villiers then went on to become immortalized in history when he became the first South African skipper to complete a clean sweep against Australia in ODI cricket.
Du Plessis will face a suspension if he captains South Africa to another over-rates offense within the next 12 months. Both Du Plessis and Tahir pleaded guilty and accepted the sanctions.
