When the Melbourne Stars needed 10 runs from six balls, Jacques Kallis had the perfect plan to thwart James Faulkner. The great all-rounder may have retired from international cricket but he proved that he still has some tricks left to flummox the batsmen. Faulkner is known to be a top class finisher and renowned to take his team home in a tense run-chases, however, even he couldn’t outwit Kallis who bowled arguably the best over of the current BBL season.
When the Stars were seemingly charging towards victory in Sunday’s KFC Big Bash League thriller, it was Kallis who turned to Sydney Thunder skipper Mike Hussey and asked for the ball. Thunder seamer Gurinder Sandhu, who could have been the logical choice for the task, had been hammered for 24 runs – including three sixes and a four by a rampant Kevin Pietersen – in the 17th over, leaving Hussey with a dilemma however the former South African great took it upon himself to deliver the goods and asked the captain to allow him to bowl the last over.
The Stars still looked on track to steal a win after Faulkner scored two runs from each of Kallis’s first three deliveries, leaving four runs required from three balls. The next was a dot, before an ill-fated attempt at a ramp shot from Faulkner off the second-last ball of the match left his side needing a boundary to win from the final delivery.
The Australian all-rounder could just manage 2 thereby giving the Sydney outfit a memorable win. Kallis had kept his cool to deliver his team their second win in two matches, securing their best start in the five-year history of the competition in the process. The key to Kallis’ success was the masterful use of length deliveries which forced Faulkner to hit towards the massive 80-metre boundary in the mid-wicket area which was difficult to clear.
