Australian all-rounder James Faulkner had an average day with the ball today but one great effort during the end of the first innings garnered him a good applause from his teammates as well as the crowd.

Death over specialist Faulkner was brought in by Steven Smith to bowl the 48th over. Australia had made a commendable comeback in the first innings with few quick wickets after Guptill and Nicolls had tore apart their bowlers earlier.

The over did not start well for Faulkner as Mitchell Santner. who was playing a good cameo innings, smacked him for six off the second ball. Santner followed it with three runs which gave the strike to fast bowler Adam Milne.

It was obvious for a tail-ender to start slogging with the final overs of innings going on and Milne tried nothing different, He attempted to drill a slightly fuller delivery by the left-armer. The batsman could not time the ball well but was hit hard. The ball directly went towards Faulkner who took a wonderful one-handed reflex catch.

The ball was at about shoulder height and the bowler who was in his follow through reacted swiftly to the chance offered by Milne. Faulkner hardly celebrated however it appeared that he gave a nonchalant send back to the batsman.

The Australians had a very bad day today as the first ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy turned out to be a complete humiliation for them. They were completely floored by New Zealand’s bowling attack and incurred a massive 159 defeat.
