Amir Hussain Lone, a budding cricketer from Jammu & Kashmir, is a very special talent. The 26-year-old man has defied all challenges and has mastered the game of cricket to fulfill his dream of becoming a cricketer.
The unique thing about Amir is that he has no arms. He lost both his arms in a tragic accident aged just eight years old at his father’s sawmill. Amir recounts the accident which changed his life.
“I was taking some food to my brother who worked there. I used to play with the sawmill machine, but on this occasion both of my arms got entangled in the machine.”
The then eight-year-old spent three years in hospital and his families earnings dried up paying his medical bills. His father who manufactured bat had to shut his business and sell everything.
“People used talk bad about my son. They used to say I was wasting both my money and time on him, that he was of no use. But he is so dear to me like a part of my body. As a father why do I need wealth when my son is not well?” said an emotional Bashir.
However, everything was not positive for him initially. When he first played cricket after the accident, people made fun of him. He terms this treatment as “bad”. The love for the game runs in his blood since he was a young kid and was determined to play the game even after such cruel incident.
‘Cricket is my passion and in the beginning, it was very difficult for me,’ said Amir, who lives in Indian-administered Kashmir. When I was younger, I wasn’t even able to eat without my hands.
Amir, who belongs from north India’s Kashmir region, has developed a unique technique to play cricket. He holds the bat between his neck and shoulder to bat. He bowls with his toes, using a sweeping leg movement to launch the cricket ball.
“Batting was not a difficult task. But bowling without arms was a miracle and I somehow managed to do it, ” said Amir.
He is now the captain of Jammu and Kashmir’s state para-cricket team and says that he is a Sachin Tendulkar fans and he inspires him.
“I am a supporter of Sachin Tendulkar. He is my inspiration and I want to play like him. My dream is to play for the national team.”
