The 4th ODI between Indian and Australia at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Wednesday didn’t just witness a brilliant catch by India’s Manish Pandey on the field but also saw Rohit Sharma caught off the field! His magnificent six over the square leg boundary was caught by a person with one hand, much to the amusement of the patrons around him as well as off-spinner Nathan Lyon who watched the ball sail above his head into the stand.
The elderly man plucked out his left hand and grabbed the ball with ease. He then held it up high and soaked in every bit of attention he was getting before giving high fives to fans seated around him. Even as other patrons wondered about the landing of the ball, this gentleman was calm and he judged it beautifully to take an effortless catch. The ball was bowled down the leg side by Kane Richardson to Sharma who just lifted it off his pads with much ease over the boundary. The over also saw the dismissal of the Indian opener but not before he has hammered another maximum and a four.
Taking a catch in the stands is an exciting prospect for most fans attending a match. The festive atmosphere across the venues in the world hosting limited overs matches allows fans to have fun and if there is a crowd catch competition it can only add to their overall enthusiasm. The tournaments like Ram Slam T20 Challenge in South Africa and the Big Bash League Down Under have seen some spectacular crowd catches in recent times.
