Watch: The Best Captain’s Knock Ever – Brian Lara v Australia, 1999: Brian Charles Lara was a phenomenal batsman to say the least. There have been a number of instances when he held the baton for West Indies to get them the cruise control of the game, often surpassing the victory line from literally nowhere, judging by the game situations.
This video is an instance of it. It is of the innings played by Brian Lara, which can easily be termed one of the best of his life. It was the third test and the decisive one in 1999 when Australia toured West Indies. Opting to bat first, Australia managed to craft a demolishing score of 490 runs on the board in the first innings. In reply, West Indies were bundled at the score of 329 runs in the first innings and Lara only managed to score 8 runs. In the second innings, West Indies bowlers made a strong comeback and bowled out Australia for 146 runs, courtesy the lethal bowling from Courtney Walsh, who took 5/39.
With 308 runs requiring of the final innings, West Indies did not find rhythm in the chase and kept on losing wickets. They were poised at 78 for 3 when the then West Indian skipper, made his way to the crease. Wickets kept falling at the other end but the left handed genius went in full swing. In a single handed fashion, he turned the fate of the game in favour of his team and after an intense finish, it was West Indies who had won the match by 1 wicket.
This was truly one of the best innings played by Lara. Each of his shots to the boundary, had that perfection in timing and placement which made the innings a treat to the eye.
Lara remained unbeaten at the score of 153*. Grab a look!
