Watch: Virender Sehwag runout by a brilliant throw from Michael Clarke: On February 2008, this T20 game between India and Australia served as a relief to the spectators as the gruelling and controversial Test series which involved the Monkey Gate had just concluded. India was on a mission to prove that they were the worthy World Champions. Australia, on the other hand, were planning that to register their 1st T20I win against India after the failed in their previous two attempts.
Michael Clarke was the stand-in captain that day as Ponting had a back problem and had to miss the game. Leading Australia for only 2nd time in International cricket, Clarke had a task at his hand. The game was also Gilchrist’s last T20I game and a lot of spectators had come in to see him at the MCG.
The stage was set! In the first over of the game, Sehwag tried to cut a Brett Lee ball thru the point-gully region. Unfortunately, Michael Clarke who was one of the best fielders of the game had stationed himself there for that particular shot. Sehwag couldn’t get the ball past Clarke and attempted to steal a single. Clarke though hit the bull’s eye from a distance of 50 yards. The precision with Clarke threw the ball was immaculate as Sehwag fell short of his ground.
Sehwag dismissal started the one-way traffic of Indian batsmen to the pavilion as the then World Champions were humiliated and humbled to their worst T20I batting performance ever with a paltry score of 74. The target was a cakewalk for Australia as the won by 9 wickets with more than 8 overs to spare, giving Gilchrist a deserving farewell.
