Sydney Thunder will face the Melbourne Stars for the 2nd time in two days in the first weekend of 2019 in Sydney. The game to be played at the Sportspark on Saturday was washed out after 10 overs of the first innings. The match was reduced to 14 overs-a-side after 2.4 overs of Thunder’s innings. They made 92/3 at the end of 10th over before the rain returned to abandon the game. This cost Thunder their chance of sealing the top spot in the points table.

Had Thunder won this game, they could have surpassed Sydney Sixers who also have same NRR as them. On the other hand, the game on Sunday will be do-or-die for the Stars with only nine points from the 11 matches. The back to back defeats in the last week against the Melbourne Renegades has cost the Stars big time. They have to win the remaining three match at any cost to have a chance of making it to the final four.

Match Details:

The 45th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will be played between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars at the Bankstown Oval in Sydney.

The match starts at 2:00 PM local time (3:00 AM GMT) (8:30 AM IST).

Streaming of this game will be available on cricket.com.au, Cricket Australia Live apps and WBBL Facebook Page.

Pitch Condition/Report:

This game will be the first WBBL fixture at the Bankstown Oval in Sydney. The venue has not hosted any Women’s professional game since 2016. In fact, the one JLT One-Day cup game it hosted this season is the only professional match here since 2016. The South Australia team made 236/7 in their 50-overs during that game with Tasmania chasing it down with one over and three wickets to spare.

Sydney Thunder:

Alex Blackwell (C), Sam Bates, Nicola Carey, Hannah Darlington, Rene Farrell, Maisy Gibson, Lisa Griffith, Rachael Haynes, Saskia Horley, Harmanpreet Kaur, Rachel Priest, Naomi Stalenberg, Stafanie Taylor, Rachel Trenaman, Belinda Vakarewa.

Melbourne Stars:

Kristen Beams (C), Erin Osborne (VC), Makinley Blows, Elly Donald, Mignon du Preez, Georgia Elwiss, Nicole Faltum, Holly Ferling, Nicola Hancock, Alana King, Lizelle Lee, Katie Mack, Chloe Rafferty, Ange Reakes, Annabel Sutherland.

Injury and Availability Updates after the announcement of the squads:

(Will be added when there is an update)

Power Picks:

Harmanpreet Kaur struggled to keep the momentum going as the tournament progressed. She made a 31-ball 19 against the Scorchers in the reverse fixture last week which resulted in a 3-run loss for Thunder. Kaur failed to open her account from the nine balls in the match against the Sixers. The 16-ball 21 before the rain on Saturday would have surely benefited India’s T20I captain.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

The likes of Stafanie Taylor and Rachael Haynes from the Thunder and the Stars’ all-rounder Erin Osborne are among the first preferred names for multipliers. Georgia Elwiss, Mignon du Preez and Harmanpreet Kaur are the ideal alternatives.

Playing XI #1 for Head to Head/Small Leagues:

Keeper – Rachel Priest

Batters – Harmanpreet Kaur, Mignon du Preez, Ange Reakes, Rachael Haynes (VC)

All-Rounders – Erin Osborne, Stafanie Taylor (C), Nicole Carey

Bowlers – Nicola Hancock, Alana King, Lisa Griffith

Playing XI #2 for Grand Leagues/Mega Leagues:

Keeper – Lizelle Lee

Batters – Naomi Stalenberg, Mignon du Preez, Ange Reakes, Rachael Haynes

All-Rounders – Erin Osborne (C), Stafanie Taylor (VC), Annabel Sutherland

Bowlers – Nicola Hancock, Maisy Gibson, Lisa Griffith

Expert Advice:

Rachel Priest and Lizelle Lee are on the same lines in terms of the damage they can cause and are also inconsistent. However, Lizelle is with 10.5 credits while Priest comes at 9. This pushes the case to consider Priest ahead of Lee as it helps to pick high priced players from other categories.

Probable Winners:

Sydney Thunder is expected to knock the Melbourne Stars out of the final four contentions and seal their spot in the same.
