ICC match referee is slated to miss the Sydney Test after he tested positive for COVID-19. Chris Silverwood is also going to miss the next Test as one of his family members tested positive. He has been instructed to isolate himself from his family for up to ten days. In his absence, assistant coach Graham Thorpe will be the stand-in coach.
Silverwood will join fast bowling coach Jon Lewis, spin mentor Jeetan Patel, and strength and conditioning specialist Darren Veness who all tested positive for COVID and are in quarantine. Another round of tests were conducted on Thursday and an all negative report is required for the series to continue.
Thorpe took an optional net session along with Ant Botha and James Anderson. Anderson interacted with the media after the practice. He stated that the team is hoping that no one else tests positive and that the team can travel to Sydney safely. He also mentioned that his team members are taking all the necessary precautions.
“We are just hoping it’s not spreading any further and we can make sure everyone is safe and able to travel to Sydney. We found out late last night (about Silverwood). It’s frustrating and we’ve been tested again this morning, the whole team,” he said.
“We are just hoping it’s not spreading any further and we can make sure everyone is safe and able to travel to Sydney. We’re trying to control the spread as much as possible and use the safety protocols around the hotel,” Anderson added.
We have to restore some pride and try and compete: James Anderson
Anderson further mentioned that the team is hoping to focus on the upcoming two Tests and block out all the things that are happening outside. He also emphasized the importance of experienced players in the squad.
“We have to restore some pride and try and compete – that’s our main focus as players. We have to block out what’s happening off the field and focus on the fourth and fifth Tests,” he said.
“It can be difficult at times, especially for guys experiencing the Ashes for the first time who are not that experienced with Test cricket and touring. That’s where the more senior players come in, we have to try and rally round, make sure everyone is in a good place and a good headspace.”
