On 8 March 2026, we saw an incredible feat achieved by the Indian team. Not only did they win the WC, but they also became the first team to win 3 titles, defended the title at home soil and became the first to win it on home soil. They also posted the highest team score in a WC final.
After the win, he dedicated the trophy to 2 important persons who shaped this Indian cricket team over the past few years. His words stated that he still respects his mentors.
The first name he took was Rahul Dravid. Dravid had been part of the team from 2021 to 2024. Under his leadership, India won the T20 WC back in 2024. He praised Dravid for keeping the ICT under strong guidance and leadership over the years.
The second and last name that he took was V.V.S Laxman. Though he didn't coach the Indian team, his efforts silently shaped the future of the team, and he helped build the next generation of players.
"Ajit Agarkar, who took a lot of flak and worked with a lot of honesty. And to Jay bhai. During my lowest ebb in my tenure after losing to NZ and then SA (at home in Test series in 2024 and 2025), he called me," he noted.
"Surya made my job easier. He has been a leader who is a father figure. Bigger purpose is to celebrate trophies, not milestones. For too many years we have celebrated milestones. I will urge you people to stop celebrating personal milestones," Gambhir reiterated.
And at last, he spoke about his difficult phases in his life as well, the ups and downs. He thanked those who stayed by him at his lowest. For Gambhir, this victory wasn’t just about the cup. It was a tribute to the people who built Indian cricket before him.
