India's T20 celebration turned into a viral controversy after a strong statement from a former Indian player, Kirti Azad, about India's celebration with the trophy.
After winning the T20 World Cup, the Indian captain, head coach, and ICC Chief Jay Shah visited a temple in Ahmedabad with the trophy to offer prayers and seek blessings.
Kirti Azad asked why the trophy was taken only to a temple and not to a mosque, church, or gurudwara, calling the move unfair.
"It is not even worth answering this question. Answering that question is a big moment for the entire country. If you ask me, then it's a huge moment for our whole country. I think it's important that we celebrate the World Cup winner. That's why I said certain statements; there is no point picking up certain statements, because these statements will only dilute your achievement"
"Imagine that the boys have gone through so much -- the amount of pressure they've been under after losing one match in South Africa, the kind of pressures the boys were under. Today, if you are giving such a statement, you're literally degrading your own players and degrading your own team, which should not be done," he added.
The comments by Kirti Azad and the strong reply from Gambhir have started a big debate online. Some fans support Azad’s question, while many others believe the players were simply celebrating their faith after winning the T20 WC. Now the discussion continues on social media about whether such celebrations should even become a controversy.
