Gill in Trouble? Is Shreyas Iyer set to replace Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain?

Shubman Gill is the officially appointed ODI captain (as of October 2024), with Shreyas Iyer currently serving as his designated vice-captain.

Following the December 20 announcement of the 2026 T20 World Cup squad (from which Gill was dropped), major reports suggest the BCCI is now considering replacing Gill with Iyer as the permanent ODI captain.

Why?

Gill’s position is under pressure due to a significant dip in batting form and a recurring neck injury that has sidelined him from recent matches.

Shreyas Iyer is the frontrunner to take over because of his tactical success in the IPL and his consistent ODI performances, including a standout run in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Due to injuries to both Gill and Iyer during the recent South Africa series, KL Rahul has been leading as a temporary captain, but he is not currently viewed as the long-term successor.

The BCCI's primary goal is to stabilize leadership for the 2027 World Cup; if they feel Gill is overburded by leading multiple formats, Iyer is expected to be handed the ODI reins permanently.
