Gus Atkinson marked his return from injury with a sensational 5-wicket haul (5/33) in the first innings against India at The Oval.

Historic achievement after 129 years

He became only the second bowler in Test history-after George Lohman (1896)—to take 60+ wickets at a strike rate under 35, achieving this feat after 129 years.

Atkinson’s early strikes helped England dismiss India for 224 runs after opting to bowl first, contributing significantly to the team’s dominance.

His five dismissals included Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna-ripping through India’s middle and lower order.

Atkinson now has 60 wickets in 13 Tests (24 innings) with 4 five-wicket hauls, averaging 21.0 with a strike rate of 34.9.

Among bowlers with 50+ Test wickets, only George Lohman (34.1) and Shamar Joseph (equal SR) have better strike rates than Atkinson.
