Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar questioned how the selection committee assessed the form and fitness of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, given they are not playing Tests or T20Is.
Vengsarkar pointed out that both veterans now play only the ODI format, which has fewer matches overall, making it difficult to judge their current form.
He said it’s unknown how selectors checked their readiness before including them in the squad for the Australia tour.
Vengsarkar emphasized that while both Rohit and Virat have been legends for Indian cricket, the selection committee must decide whether to continue with them or groom new players.
Sunil Gavaskar supported this concern, saying players nearing the end of their careers need more match practice and should consider playing Vijay Hazare Trophy when not on international duty.
Vengsarkar agreed it’s wise to hand the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, praising his form, consistency, and leadership qualities across all three formats.
