Matt Renshaw made his ODI debut against India on 19 October 2025, almost 10 years after his Test debut in November 2016 against South Africa.
Renshaw impressed early in his Test career with solid knocks, including 184 runs in Sydney and consistent scores during the 2017 India tour, but later struggled to maintain form.
After repeated failures as an opener and in the middle order, he was dropped from the national team and removed from Cricket Australia’s contracted players list.
Renshaw rebuilt his career with strong performances in Sheffield Shield, Big Bash League, and Australia A, scoring 7 centuries since 2021 at an average of 48.68.
He earned his ODI call-up after Marnus Labuschagne was dropped from the squad, getting his long-awaited chance at age 29.
Like Hussey, who made his debut in his 30s, Renshaw’s late rise could lead to a second innings in his international career, with potential to become a reliable middle-order option for Australia.
