Shreyas Iyer was known as a stylish batter, but injuries and poor form raised doubts. Fans and experts kept focusing on one recurring issue.
Opposing bowlers targeted Iyer with short balls, making it his biggest weakness. Commentators and fans often pointed this out.
“When I had my back injury, some people said I would never be the same again. I asked myself, ‘why can’t I be?’ The way you shape your mindset after an injury is important. You choose what to focus on and what to ignore,” Iyer said on JioHotstar’s ‘Believe’.
Iyer said criticism of his short-ball weakness motivated him to improve. He now attacks short balls and credits coaches like Pravin Amre and Abhishek Nayar for helping him.
Iyer said he practices by facing real bowlers for long sessions to build rhythm and quick movement, just like AB de Villiers, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.
Iyer changed his mindset, trusting his instincts and not fearing mistakes. Now, his confidence shows in every shot.
Now bowlers are hesitant to use short balls against Iyer. What was once his weakness is becoming a strength, showing how he turned criticism into improvement.
