Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a strong contender to replace Tilak Varma in India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand series.
Tilak recently underwent testicular torsion surgery, which rules him out of the five-match T20I series vs New Zealand, starting January 21.
With a minimum four-week rehab, Tilak’s participation in the T20 World Cup starting February 7 is also uncertain.
Iyer has returned from injury, scored heavily in IPL 2025, and last played T20Is in December 2023. His recent form puts him in a strong position.
The T20I series begins on January 21 in Nagpur, followed by matches in Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram.
With Tilak ruled out, the BCCI is expected to announce a replacement soon, while Iyer prepares with domestic and ODI commitments.
