Shubman Gill under pressure? Akash Chopra raises big questions after GT loss

Is Shubman Gill already losing his captaincy spark? After Gujarat Titans’ unexpected defeat, a former India player is now questioning his leadership.

Former India player spoke out after the loss, saying Gill made bad decisions as captain when things got tough.

Gill’s captaincy questioned

"What has happened to Shubman Gill's captaincy? I ask this question because Prasidh Krishna was playing, but you weren't bowling him at all. 12 overs had passed, the opposing team had almost won the match, then you brought in Prasidh Krishna, he took three wickets in three overs, and the game became slightly thrilling, but what's the point?" he said.

Poor bowling choices

"After that, Mohammed Siraj's two overs were left. You were showing confidence in Ashok Sharma, which is absolutely fine, but Siraj was there. There was a lot left to be desired in Shubman Gill's captaincy. I am at a loss for words. Why was Prasidh Krishna held back for so long? Why wasn't Siraj given his full quota of overs?" Chopra elaborated.

Aggressive batting to impress selectors?

"What was he trying to do? He was trying to hit hard because his name has to come in the T20 team. He wants this to be a statement season. Volume of runs is required, but along with that, how he plays is important. I think he hit four fours after stepping out against fast bowlers. He was jumping while giving himself room every time," he said.

What else he observed?

"He was absolutely stunning in the powerplay, but his strike rate went down slightly after that. Jos Buttler's strike rate also went down. Gujarat's batting didn't work from No. 4 to No. 7 last year. Things might change this year, but the same problem has come to the fore," Chopra observed.
