Indian selectors plan to revive the single-captain policy for all formats, moving away from the current system of having separate captains.
Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to take over as captain in all formats, having impressed as the Test captain in the recent 2–2 series draw against England.
Currently, Rohit Sharma leads ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav leads T20Is, and Gill leads Tests, but selectors feel one captain would ensure better unity and long-term planning.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar strongly supports Gill, having already pushed for his appointment as Test captain.
With Rohit Sharma (38) and Suryakumar Yadav (34) nearing the end of their careers, the selectors prefer a younger leader for the future.
Gill’s proven leadership in both IPL and Tests makes him a strong candidate for T20 and ODI captaincy as well.
Gill will play in the Asia Cup T20 next month, and while he isn’t captain yet, there’s a high chance he will be handed T20 leadership soon.
