Shubman Gill will play for Punjab in their Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra starting January 22, just days after India’s ODI series loss to New Zealand.
Despite a tough ODI series, Gill has opted against rest and will shift his focus straight to red-ball cricket instead of taking a cooling-off period.
Gill travelled from Indore to Rajkot, an eight-hour journey with no direct flights, to join the Punjab squad ahead of the crucial fixture.
Punjab sit sixth in Group B with 11 points and must win both of their remaining matches to keep knockout hopes alive. Gill’s experience could prove vital.
More international stars are set to feature in this leg. Mohammed Siraj will lead Hyderabad, while Ravindra Jadeja has confirmed his return for Saurashtra.
After mixed results in recent international outings and a neck injury, Gill heads into Ranji with a chance to regain form and confidence with Punjab’s red-ball side.
