Why West Indies withdrew from the India Tour in 2014 – The full story behind the Boycott

During the 2014 India tour, West Indies abruptly withdrew midway after the fourth ODI in Dharamsala, cancelling the rest of the matches including one ODI, one T20I, and three Tests.

The main reason behind the boycott was a major pay dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) regarding player remuneration.

Players accused WIPA president Wavell Hinds of misleading them during the signing of a new contract. Captain Dwayne Bravo demanded Hinds and other officials resign due to conflict of interest.

Bravo appealed to WICB chairman Dave Cameron to mediate, but the board refused to talk directly with players, insisting on communicating only through WIPA.

Despite internal conflict, West Indies played the fourth ODI in Dharamsala, where India won the match and led the series 2-1. Soon after, the team announced its withdrawal from the tour.

The BCCI expressed shock at the sudden boycott and later arranged a replacement five-match series with Sri Lanka. The incident drew widespread criticism from former West Indies players and cricket fans.
