West Indies to host South Africa, Australia for tri nation series: West Indies will host World Champions Australia, and South Africa in a tri nation ODI tournament in the Caribbean in June next year. The 10-match event will take place over a three-week period from June 6 to June 26, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced. Matches will be played in Guyana, St Kitts and Barbados.
“This tournament promises to be very exciting with two of the world’s top teams coming to the Caribbean,” said Roland Holder, the WICB manager for cricket operations. “It will provide a golden opportunity for our team to test themselves against two of the best sides in the world in the ODI format”, he added.
The tournament opens with round-robin matches contested at the Guyana National Stadium before the teams travel to Basseterre in St. Kitts for another series of matches at Warner Park. The series then moves to the Barbados capital of Bridgetown for the final round of matches at Kensington Oval, culminating with the final.
Australia are ranked number one in this format and also won the ODI World Cup in 2015 at home. They recently triumphed the English in the ODI series after the Ashes. South Africa on the other hand are currently ranked third in the world and defeated the Kiwis in their last ODI series.
They are currently contesting India in a 5 match affair. West Indies have not had the best of record in recent times against both teams. They were handed a 0-2 defeat in the Test series, last time Australia came here. The South Africans incidentally, were unbeaten throughout their 2010 tour of the Caribbean, which took place right after the ICC World T20.
