Barbados Royals and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are set to face each other in the second match of the CPL 2021 at Warner Park. The Royals are led by Jason Holder, who guided them to glory back in 2019.
In 2020, however, Barbados failed to qualify for the playoffs as they finished fifth in the table. For the upcoming season, they have roped in quite a few new faces, including Glenn Phillips, Mohammad Amir and others.
Phillips plied his trade for the Jamaica Tallawahs, but will now serve the Royals. The Patriots, on the other hand, won one out of their 10 matches in the previous season. The trading in of Dwayne Bravo and Sherfane Rutherford should strengthen their batting.
Chris Gayle missed the last season and it remains to be seen how he marks his return to the Patriots. The team will be captained by Rayad Emrit, who has a truckload of experience in the cash-rich CPL.
Playing combinations
Barbados Royals
Johnson Charles and Glenn Phillips should open the batting for the Royals in the tournament. The middle-order, featuring Hope, Mayers, Azam Khan, Perera and Holder, has enough firepower. Perera and Holder are also expected to deliver with the ball in hand. Hayden Walsh Jr has bowled exceptionally of late and his role will be critical. The onus will also be on Mohammad Amir.
Predicted XI
Johnson Charles, Glenn Phillips (WK), Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Azam Khan, Thisara Perera, Jason Holder (C), Raymon Reifer/Oshane Thomas, Ashley Nurse, Hayden Walsh Jr, Mohammad Amir
Bench– Justin Greaves, Smit Patel, Raymon Reifer/Oshane Thomas, Nyeem Young, Jake Lintott, Joshua Bishop
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis are most likely to open the batting for the Patriots in their first match. Both Thomas and Da Silva can hit the ball a long way, but only one should play. Bopara, Asif Ali and Rutherford lend solidity to their middle order. It will be interesting to see how the two spinners- Fawad Ahmed and Fabian Allen- perform. The onus will also be on Bravo and Sheldon Cottrell.
Predicted XI
Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Joshua da Silva/Devon Thomas (WK), Ravi Bopara, Asif Ali, Sherfane Rutherford, Fabian Allen, Dwayne Bravo, Rayad Emrit (C), Fawad Ahmed, Sheldon Cottrell
Bench– Mikyle Louis, Colin Archibald, Jon-Russ Jaggesar, Dominic Drakes, Paul van Meekeren
