WI vs BAN: Bangladesh fined 20 percent of match fees for slow over-rate in 2nd T20I

Bangladesh have been penalised 20 per cent of the match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate against West Indies in the second T20I in Roseau, Dominica, told the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday. Bangladesh were found to be one over short of the target during the game on July 3 (Sunday).

The penalty was imposed by Richie Richardson, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. The ICC reiterated Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, and states that players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. 

There will be no formal hearing, as Mahmudullah pleads guilty

Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah admitted to committing the offence and accepted the penalty that was put forward. Hence, there was no need for a formal hearing. Bangladesh went on to lose the match on Sunday by 35 runs, and Nicholas Pooran’s men took a 1-0 lead going into the final game.

In the second T20I, West Indies batted first and put up a total of 193 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Rovman Powell, who came in at number five, was the top scorer with a quickfire 61* runs off 28 balls. Opener Brandon King scored 57 runs off 43 balls at the top, and skipper Pooran contributed with 34 runs off 30 balls in the middle. The pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers was off-spinner Mahedi Hasan, finishing with figures of one wicket for 31 runs in four overs.

The Bangladesh innings was led by the all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, who scored an unbeaten 68 runs off 52 balls, coming in at number three. Afif Hossain also contributed with a knock of 34 runs off 27 balls, coming in at number five. None of the other visiting batters went past a score of over 15 runs, and they finished with a total of 158 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Powell was given the Player of the Match award for his performance with the bat.

The third and final T20I will be played on July 7 (Thursday) at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.
